Be in subjection [therefore] to every human institution for the Lord's sake; whether to [the] king as supreme.
1 Peter 2:13 (DARBY)
This biblical passage leads many Christians to reflect on world events and how certain leaders govern their countries. They wonder whether they should truly submit to their authority and obey their laws. Some seek a plausible explanation to understand the extent of this obligation to obey, while others are adamant and refuse to submit.
The Bible is clear: believers must submit to established authority, even if they disapprove of its choices and decisions. The governmental system manages all aspects of the country to ensure its smooth functioning and allow everyone to live in peace. This is why the Bible asks us to respect its authority. However, it does not in any way require obedience to laws and commands that contradict or reject the word of God. You are not obligated to submit to decisions that go against your faith. Nevertheless, while affirming your faith, you must acknowledge the authority of those in power.
It is not forbidden to disagree with certain regulations or decisions made by your superiors or the authorities, but it is important to recognize their authority. Therefore, if you must oppose them, do so with wisdom and discernment, to avoid causing conflicts that could put you in difficulty. Remember Paul and Peter; they were imprisoned for the Gospel. Instead of insulting their jailers, they chose to pray for them. This is also what you should do when the authorities place you in difficult situations: submit to their authority while affirming your faith.
May the grace and peace of God be with you all.
