Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are My disciples.
John 13:35 (NLT)
One of the subjects that constantly causes confusion, even among those who think they understand it, is love. Almost everyone, including Christians, has a false idea of what it means to love. Love is often defined as a feeling of belonging and the strong emotions one feels for another person. However, the Bible does not define it this way. In my marriage counseling sessions, couples are always faced with a dilemma when I explain to them how they should love each to other according to the Bible.
Jesus not only gave several instructions on what love is and how to demonstrate it, but He also embodied it through His own sacrifice. One of my favorite quotes is this: "Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends." Notice what He says here: "If you have love for one another." He doesn't say, as He often does, "If you love one another." This is an important distinction that should not be overlooked. The difference is that having love for someone means having compassion for them. That is, caring about their needs, being willing to support them without necessarily being close to them or having a strong emotional attachment.
Jesus was attached to His disciples who were close to Him, but He showed love for others who followed Him. He cared about their problems, shared their concerns, and was always available to help them, regardless of their social status, lifestyle, background, or circumstances, whether they were sick or living in difficult conditions. If you do not have love for others, regardless of their situation or condition, you cannot be a disciple of Christ. This love is also part of the sacrifices He requires of us. How do you view those who live on the streets, those who are always drunk, and those who are not part of your social circle? Your answer will reveal whether or not you are a disciple of Christ.
May God's grace and peace be with you all.
