Then the man said, “Lord, I believe,” and he worshiped Him.
John 9:38 (NIV)
I often meet people who, despite regularly attending church, listening to messages, and witnessing the work of the Holy Spirit in the lives of believers, still refuse to believe in Jesus. They demand tangible proof from Him before agreeing to believe and receive God's salvation. They define the nature of the proof they expect—such as a miraculous healing or a humanly impossible feat. Sometimes, they simply want a specific problem in their lives to disappear before placing their trust in Christ.
The blind man in this account did not wait for a miracle in order to believe; his heart was already prepared to believe in the Messiah and to follow Him. When Jesus healed him, he had not seen His face; yet, his words proved that he had faith in the Person Himself—in who He was—and not merely in what He had accomplished. During their encounter, Jesus did not ask if he believed in the One who had healed him and restored his sight, but rather if he believed in the Son of Man. That makes all the difference. He asked Jesus to reveal who He was (the Son of Man) so that he could believe in Him. He did not hesitate to demonstrate his faith and his eagerness to believe in Jesus without having even seen Him.
When Jesus revealed that He Himself was that Son of Man, the man did not seek further certainty. He did not ask if this was truly the One who had healed him. His response was unequivocal: "Lord, I believe." He immediately worshipped Christ. Today, we face the same obstacle. Yet, we want to know, see, and understand everything before believing. Your faith should not be the result of a divine miracle; on the contrary, it is your faith that must bring about the miracle in your life. Believing in Jesus is an act of the heart that does not depend on external factors. Believe first and be patient; Jesus will reveal Himself to you to perform an unexpected miracle.
May the grace and peace of God be with you.
