Peace That Brings Us Together

Let the peace of Christ, to which you were indeed called in one body, rule in your hearts; and be thankful.

Colossians 3:15 (NASB)

Addressing the Christians in Colossae, Paul wants to help them understand the importance of the Christian life, while guiding them toward a life of unity, where everyone must care for and support one another. From this perspective, it may seem difficult to care for one's own Christian life and help others. In reality, Paul is referring to the rapprochement this will bring within the congregation. Everyone will grow closer to one another.

Even within churches, disagreements can arise among Christians. One group may disagree with another, or members may challenge the choice of a pastor for unconventional reasons. This is not really a problem, as long as it does not cause unnecessary discussions or divisions and dissension within the Church of Jesus Christ. Paul's teaching is that we have all been called by God to serve and worship Him with one mind.

It is therefore necessary and imperative that peace reign among the members of a congregation. This is not the peace we desire when all is well, but the peace of Christ, which teaches us to tolerate one another, even when we disagree on a point. It is this peace that must reign in your hearts. So, even if you disagree with the position of another believer, even if you contest the appointment of a leader, do not see this as a reason to hate them or leave your assembly. Rather, be grateful that you have a reason to express your point of view with love and objectivity.

May the grace and peace of God be with you all.
