Seeking Counsel

Plans fail when there is no counsel, but they succeed when advisers are many.

Proverbs 15:22 (NABRE)

When His time came to begin His ministry, knowing who He was and the power He had to accomplish what He was on earth to do, Jesus could have gone out into the field and begun teaching and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom. Instead, He prayed all night for God’s counsel and then He chose the twelve with whom He would spend three years in the work of the ministry.

Why did Jesus, a member of the Trinity, need disciples to accompany Him and help Him in His earthly ministry? Because He wants to show us that each of us needs the help of others to better accomplish our plans. You may have a great idea, but it may never see fruition because you want to do it alone. Even though Jesus did not need the approval of the 12, He still needed their counsel at times.

We often wonder why we cannot move forward in ministry or in our plans. But we refuse to trust others and take advice from them. God Himself does not work that way. If our salvation was accomplished so successfully at the cross, it is because the three persons of the Godhead came together to make it possible. Do not try to go it alone with your plans, you will fail miserably. Seek the advice of others.

May the grace and peace of God be with you all.
