Steer Clear of Those Who Sow Division

These are the people who divide you, who follow mere natural instincts and do not have the Spirit.

During the first year after my conversion—as I was discovering the Church and the spiritual life—I felt drawn to anyone who appeared spiritual. Simply hearing them speak about God, seeing them perform their tasks with joy, and watching them pray fervently during worship services was enough to convince me of their spirituality. Yet, I was sorely mistaken. One day, noticing my confusion, my pastor took me aside to offer some advice. Bible in hand, he explained that not everyone who sings and prays in church is necessarily a true Christian.

What a shock! Just as I was taking my first steps in this environment—seeking my place and the right path to follow—the pastor himself was advising me not to believe everyone. I was astounded. Yet, he was absolutely right; two months later, the man I had so wanted to emulate for his wisdom and kindness turned out to be a con artist who manipulated people for money. He operated so skillfully that the money he collected even appeared to be intended for helping the needy. It was a lesson in wisdom I am unlikely to forget.

This lesson does not mean we should be suspicious of everyone. However, caution is necessary, because some people—despite appearing to be fervent and zealous Christians—pursue only their own interests. If sowing discord within the Church is required to achieve their goals, they will do so without the slightest hesitation. We must guard against this. This is where the Holy Spirit plays a crucial role in our lives. Surrendering fully to Him means trusting Him to choose the people we allow into our lives. The only way to avoid those who sow division and are devoid of the Spirit is to trust in the Holy Spirit, who knows hearts and thoughts.
