When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone.
James 1:13 (NIV)
How quick and easy it is for us to blame God when we fall into temptation and sin. Often when we fall into temptation, we blame God by saying, "God should not have allowed this to happen in my life" or even "God made me this way, it's my nature." Temptation and trial are two different things, but they are often confused. The Scriptures make a clear distinction between trials and temptations. Trials come from God, but temptations do not. God may test us by letting us endure trials and difficulties, but He never tempts us.
God tests His people to strengthen their character, but He does not lead them to sin. God does not tempt because His desire is for us to live holy lives. Temptation leads us to sin, which is the opposite of holiness. God uses trials for our eternal benefit, while Satan sends temptation to harm us and hinder our spiritual growth. Christians should never say that it was God who tempted them.
When temptation arises, we must recognize it with an alert mind. We must recognize that God is light and there is no darkness in Him. As a Christian, if you give in to temptation, the Scriptures instruct you to be honest and confess your sins to God. According to His promise, your Father will forgive you and deliver you from your guilt. After that, you must rely on Him, knowing that you cannot face temptations on your own.
May the grace and peace of God be with you all.
