Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes, And prudent in their own sight!
Isaiah 5:21 (NKJV)
Wisdom is a gift from God. No one can become wise without God. Some might object that this is a mistake, because they know wonderful, naturally wise people. It is these wonderful, naturally wise people that the Bible speaks of when it refers to the wisdom of the world. Here is a common definition of wisdom: “Wisdom is a quality of mind characterized by discernment, prudence, and moderation in the conduct of life.” There is no shame in affirming that this is true, for the wise person truly possesses all these qualities.
But let us examine the definition that Psalm 111, verse 10, gives us of wisdom: “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever.” (KJV) You may not find the qualities mentioned in the definition of human wisdom, but believe me, they are all contained in the single word "FEAR." Those who fear God live according to His precepts, which gives them sound understanding. It is this understanding that brings them all the qualities that come from God.
It is also important to note in this verse the eternal praise offered to God. This means that those who, in their fear of God, demonstrate sound understanding, encompassing all aspects of wisdom, seek to glorify Him through their wisdom. Thus, wisdom is a way of worshipping God for who He is and for the grace He bestows upon us. You may be wondering: How does one become wise according to the biblical definition? It's simple, because James 1:5 tells us: “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” (KJV)). God desires to give you wisdom from above; ask Him for it, and you will have the fear that glorifies Him.
May the grace and peace of God be with you all.
