Then drew near unto him all the publicans and sinners for to hear him. And the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying, This man receiveth sinners, and eateth with them.
Luke 15:1-2 (KJV)
In His earthly ministry, Jesus focused His attention on people and service. He had compassion for people, He did not judge their outward appearance or regard their social status. He welcomed all without discrimination. He healed them, taught them about the kingdom of God, and ate and drank with them. This led the scribes and Pharisees to criticize Him.
Christ did not consider the destitute, the homeless, and the poor as everyone else. They had a place at His table. He loved them as much as His disciples and all those He called His friends. He saw beyond those who criticized Him, He aimed at the salvation of sinners. If His message was the kingdom of God, it could not be preached to those who thought they knew everything and to those who were interested in the things of the world. Today, He asks us to do the same, to see beyond, far beyond; to see sinners.
He who wants to be like Christ must know how to welcome those who are rejected and despised by society, without judging them. He must show compassion and be ready to accept criticism with joy, without condemning anyone, as Jesus did. It is your message that must be important to those who listen to you, not their social status, their outward appearance or their level of education. Make your ministry like that of Christ.
May the grace and peace of God be with you all.
