I called on the Lord in distress; The Lord answered me and set me in a broad place.
Psalm 118:5 (NKJV)
When sickness strikes us, we run to the doctor to find healing. If the sickness persists despite medication and treatment, we turn to God to find complete healing. It is most often in these moments of distress that we exercise the greatest faith and perseverance, waiting for God to act on our behalf.
As long as the sickness persists, we pray, but if after a time of prayer, we see healing, although we are happy, it still astonishes us as if we were not sure that God would do it. The Christians of the early church had this same reaction when they saw Peter appear at the door of the room where they had gathered to pray. They spent the night praying for him to be released from prison, and when God finally answered their prayer, they were astonished (Acts 12).
We should never be surprised when God acts on our behalf. If we approach Him in times of pain, it is because we know that His mighty hand will deliver us no matter how dire the situation. David had this assurance in his God, that is why he cried out to God in the midst of distress. Often, even without seeing God’s answer, he proclaims his deliverance. Do not be astonished when God reveals Himself to you or answers your prayer immediately otherwise you will always be in astonishment.
May the grace and peace of God be with you all.
