A Compassion That Attracts Favor

It is well with the man who deals generously and lends, who conducts his affairs with justice...He has distributed freely, he has given to the poor; his righteousness endures for ever; his horn is exalted in honor.

Psalm 112:5-9 (RSV)

Sleeping peacefully without worrying about tomorrow and without dwelling on one's problems is everyone's dream. Some pretend that everything is fine so they can sleep, while others hope for something they can't explain. Often, these people close their eyes to the situation of others, as if they were the only ones with problems. To hear them tell it, their problem is always more serious than anyone else's.

Yet, there are always people who, despite their own difficulties, reach out to those in need without expecting anything in return. It is of these people that the author of this psalm speaks. They have compassion for others and do everything in their power to help them. To these people, God grants special favor. They sleep at night without fearing tomorrow and are not troubled by bad news that might torment them.

God looks at the intention of the heart and grants His grace and favor to those who live righteously. No matter how heavy your burden, there is always someone who is suffering more than you. That is why you must show compassion towards others. For God will surely bless you. Remember the suffering of Jesus on the cross. Despite His pain, He took the time to listen to the voice of the thief who defended Him. He had pity on his anguished soul and made him the greatest of promises. When you care for others, the Lord lifts you up.

May the grace and peace of God be with you all.
