A Convincing Word

Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.

Acts 2:41 (NIV)

In one of our previous messages, I mentioned that Peter’s preaching after Pentecost resulted in numerous conversions, although I did not specify the exact number. In this verse, however, we discover the precise figure of new disciples who joined their ranks: approximately 3,000. What is worth noting, however, is that the passage explicitly indicates that this number *increased*—implying that many other believers were already present long before this experience of the baptism of the Holy Spirit. How, then, was Peter able to convince these 3,000 people? He simply opened his mouth and let a convincing word flow forth.

I am certain that, at this point, you are probably wondering what this "convincing word" actually consisted of. No matter exactly what he may have said—even though it is recorded in black and white in the Scriptures—the essential point is that he proclaimed a message of repentance and salvation. You, too, carry this same message within you; it is right there, ready and waiting, on the tip of your tongue. And wherever you may be, there is almost certainly someone nearby who needs to hear this specific message proclaimed. Peter did not open his mouth knowing in advance that he would convince 3,000 people; he simply proclaimed the message to inform them of God’s grace in Jesus Christ.

Just like Peter, you simply need to open your mouth to share the message of Jesus Christ crucified—that message which brings peace and salvation. You do not need to know how many people will take you seriously, nor how many will be led to repentance and join the ranks of believers. Your role is simply to speak; The Holy Spirit will take it upon Himself to ensure that every word and every phrase flowing from your lips is powerful enough to win your 3,000 souls, to the glory of God. The power of your message lies not in the words you speak on your own initiative, but rather in what the Holy Spirit places upon your lips to convict those whom God has called. Open your mouth and proclaim this convincing message.

May the grace and peace of God be with you.
