Established Authority

Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.

Romans 13:1 (NIV)

Although Paul states, in a specific instance, that Christians should not appear before pagans for judgment, he does not suggest that pagan judicial authority is non-existent or that it cannot be exercised over a Christian in a given situation. Yet, this is what many Christians believe; therein lies their misunderstanding of biblical teachings regarding authority in general.

God may place you in a position of authority—at the head of a business, a school, or a church, for a specific purpose concerning Him—but the way you exercise that authority, or treat others, is not dictated by God in the same manner as it was for Saul when he became king over Israel. God had given him a pure heart to lead His people, yet he allowed himself to be consumed by envy and pride. This cost him his life. It is this aspect—often misunderstood—that compounds our misinterpretation of the subject.

The system of government is established by God according to a hierarchical order. This hierarchy defines the roles, responsibilities, and levels of authority of individuals within the structure; this is what God establishes. However, the choice of the specific person placed within this hierarchy to lead you rests entirely with you. If you choose the wrong person, do not hold God responsible for your error should that person act differently than you had hoped. You have a duty to obey established authority; this is a divine decree.
