A Little Common Sense

Writer's picture: J.J. PapinJ.J. Papin

If we say, ‘We’ll go into the city’—the famine is there, and we will die. And if we stay here, we will die. So let’s go over to the camp of the Arameans and surrender. If they spare us, we live; if they kill us, then we die.”

2 Kings 7:4 (NIV)

When we go through difficult times, we complain about our situation, we pray, we fast, we lament, waiting for God to act on our behalf. We never question the reality of our life through our circumstances to determine whether we should act in faith or continue to wait. If you read the previous verses, you will see that this is exactly what the four lepers did. They looked at their situation and all the options available to them and made a final decision. Instead of starving to death, they chose to embrace the desire of their hearts.

The following verses show us how God used their decision to go for what was ahead of them to scare the Syrian soldiers. Of course, they were discussing among themselves what would happen to them if the Syrians decided to kill them. Verses 5-7 reveal the blessings they received for acting with common sense. Not only did they eat and drink well, but they also had time to go and hide the silver, gold, and clothing they found in the tents. They just had a little common sense to act on the desire of their hearts. In other words, by faith.

Do you take the time to be realistic and think about your situation to make a decision? Sometimes God gives us desires to push us to act by faith, but our emotionality and fear of failure make us doubt what we have received from Him. Instead of moving forward by faith, we prefer to lament the mistakes that cause us pain. The lepers could be content to look at the negative side of their situation and accept dying of hunger, but with a little common sense, they chose to move forward in faith. It is time for you to show common sense and act by faith. God will take care of the rest.

May the grace and peace of God be with you all.

(I encourage you to read the whole chapter)
