But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.
James 1:25 (NKJV)
What prevents some Christians from progressing in their walk with God, despite their desire to grow in faith, is their lack of knowledge of the Word. They participate in all the activities of their church, attend spiritual revival conferences, and even Bible study and support groups, but they always find themselves back at square one, wondering why they aren't progressing. Their problem isn't a lack of desire or willpower, but rather a lack of knowledge of God's Word.
When you go to church and only listen to the pastor's sermon or a particular aspect of his message, you will always feel a void after a while. What you remember when you leave, however striking it may be, you will forget within a week or two. The preaching of the Word is important for your instruction, but it is your true understanding of it that will allow you to grow. In some circumstances, teachings may not be helpful, but what you retain of God's perfect law will strengthen your faith.
It is important to keep God's Word in your heart and apply it daily, according to the situations you encounter. Those who merely listen to sermons without delving into the teachings of the Bible always refer to the words of their pastor, unable to make informed decisions based on their own knowledge of God's Word. If you desire to grow in faith and in intimacy with God, immerse yourself fully in His perfect law. A new life awaits you, a life of perfect relationship with God.
May the grace and peace of God be with you all.
