A Simple Rule

Joash did what was right in the eyes of the Lord all the years Jehoiada the priest instructed him.

2 Kings 12:2 (NIV)

In my country, when I was a child, we were not allowed to look an adult who was speaking to us straight in the eye, it was considered a lack of respect. This was even more true when it was a reprimand or a reproach that they were addressing to us. We could neither look them in the eye nor interrupt them while they were speaking. Only a child who could listen without looking into the eyes and without speaking was considered educated and upright.

There are several examples in the Bible of kings who did what was right in the eyes of God. For this, there was a simple rule to follow. Failing which, this rule placed them in the list of those who did what was wrong. King Joash, in this passage, did what was right in the eyes of God only during the years when he received instructions from Jehoiada. Further down, in chapter 24, we see that he changed sides. He stopped doing what was right and turned to other gods.

Through this story, we understand that living in obedience to God’s word is the simple rule for doing what is right in His eyes. Apart from His word, we can only do what is right for the world. But, by living in obedience to this rule, not only will we enjoy His blessings, but we will also continue to grow in faith, develop a personal relationship with Him, and bear fruit that endures for His glory. Do not follow the example of King Joash who walked before God for a time, always be subject to His rules through His word and you will succeed in everything you do.

May the grace and peace of God be with you all.
