A Simple Thought

A person may think their own ways are right, but the Lord weighs the heart.

Proverbs 21:2 (NIV)

Some people think that as long as it doesn't harm anyone or cause them major problems, because everyone will know how to get out of it, the mere idea of doing something that will bring in a lot of money might not be a bad thing. "My intention isn't bad, it's just to make a little money," one might say. Unfortunately, this is where many fail. A simple thought can cost them their position, their job, their family, their friends, and even their relationship with God.

Balaam had a simple thought: to make a little money. Knowing that God would not abandon his people, he accepted Balak's payment to curse Israel. This would later prove that he was acting against God's will (Numbers 22:25). Judas too, confident that Jesus would not be arrested and wanting to inspire him to act as the devastating messiah the people eagerly awaited, harbored the same simple thought. He paid the consequences (Matthew 27:3-5). Although the two men had a simple thought that would harm no one, God perceived it as malicious.

We often believe that a simple action will not harm our relationship with God or cause Him to punish us, for He is a God of compassion and love. The thought may be simple, but it is the intention and motivation behind it that will cause us to lose God's favor. No matter how simple your plan to accomplish something great, be sure to consult God's Word and draw near to Him in prayer. He is God; He knows better than you do the damage a simple thought can cause in your life.

May God's grace and peace be with you all.
