A True Friend

One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.

Proverbs 18:24 (NIV)

Sometimes, we trust someone because they're always there, no matter what we're doing. We consider them family, sharing our joys and secrets, because we think we can rely on them. This reassuring closeness prevents us from seeing that they aren't a true friend, but rather someone who manipulates us and uses us as a resource during their difficult times.

It's a disappointment we've all experienced: having a friend for whom we would give everything, but who only uses us to satisfy their own needs. A true friend is someone who considers your needs and difficulties before their own, who remains loyal in all circumstances, and who doesn't try to get close to you based on what you might do. A sincere friend offers support and encouragement. They might even put aside their own problems to help you through your trials.

You might think such a friend doesn't exist. Yet, Solomon tells us the opposite when he affirms that there is a friend closer than a brother. A faithful Christian, who lives according to Christ's example, will undoubtedly be that friend who will support you in all circumstances, for they know that Jesus is the one and only friend who will never abandon us. If you are looking for a faithful friend who considers you a member of their family, be that friend yourself to those around you. For it is by being a friend in the image of Christ that others will feel comfortable with you, become attached to you, and support you.

May the grace and peace of God be with you all.
