These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised.
Hebrews 11:39 (NIV)
Many Christians who claim to have faith always expect God to answer their prayers immediately. To them, their faith is the reason why God must act quickly on their behalf and, if He does not do it as they desire, at least He must do something for them. This chapter of the book of Hebrews testifies to the great works that Old Testament believers did for God and yet did not see God’s hand in their personal affairs.
The author focuses on the faith they all had in God and how He used them for His glory. They were all privileged to be an instrument of God either to deliver His people or to protect them from the enemy. We see the torture that some New Testament Christians suffered despite their faith in Christ. Beyond the sufferings and tribulations mentioned in these passages, there is an important element that must be looked at, their faith served as a testimony to help us grow in the knowledge of God.
Whether in the Old or New Testament, they all called upon God for help, some had their prayers answered, others did not have an answer, or God gave them a different answer, like Paul in his situation (2 Cor. 12). If you are going through a trial where you do not receive an answer from God to your prayers, it does not mean that He is not interested in you. Be faithful in faith and persevere because God can use you to be a living testimony to those who observe you.
May the grace and peace of God be with you all.
