And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
Matthew 10:28 (NKJV)
Hold and threatened by two kidnappers in his own home, a Christian father feels concerned for the safety of his family, he proposes to his kidnappers to let his children go and to keep him hostage. Displeased with his proposal, one of them points a gun at his head; instead of being afraid and backing down, he looks at his children and tells them: "Everything will be fine, our Lord is in control of the situation". Hearing these reassuring words from the mouth of a victim who should be afraid for his life, the kidnappers ask him to give them his car key and run away.
In his report, the police officer asks him what makes him so calm in such a situation, he answers: "The word of God teaches us not to be afraid of the one who can kill the body but not the soul". The father was assured that until God gave His permission no one could harm him. And even if it were, it is the body that would be killed, but his soul would be in the presence of his God.
Do you have this assurance for yourself just like this father who had no idea what could happen to him? When Jesus sent His disciples on a mission, He knew that it would not be an easy mission, He knew that many would reject them and even beat them to death. To reassure them, He gave them these words of comfort to convince them that their soul is at peace with God, they need not be afraid. If you are at peace with God, like this father, you will not be afraid of the dangers that threaten your life, but you will trust in your God who will act for you according to His will.
May the grace and peace of God be with you all.
