God Anoints Who He Wants

He said to his men, “The Lord forbid that I should do this to my lord the king. I shouldn’t attack the Lord’s anointed one, for the Lord himself has chosen him.”

1 Samuel 24:6 (NLT)

I love this verse from Paul that tells us to repay no one evil for evil, but to pursue good before all men (Romans 12:17). If Paul says it to warn us, David gave us the example when, despite all Saul's attacks to kill him, he had the opportunity to kill him himself, but he preferred to remember that he cannot touch one of the Lord's anointed, even if he himself were one.

If we summarize David's journey, he was at the royal court, playing the harp to heal Saul. He was Jonathan's best friend, Saul's son, and the husband of Saul's daughter. He was able to benefit from all the favors of the king, but Saul continued to pursue him relentlessly. What catches my attention the most is that both were anointed by God for the same position, but one was the hunter and the other the prey.

The lesson of this passage is that you should never set your sights on the Lord's anointed to harm them. Like David, Saul had God's favor, but his behavior and disobedience caused him to lose that favor. When God calls you to a ministry, don't be surprised if after a while He decides to replace you with another. He is God, He chooses who He wants and when He wants. Saul never wanted to understand this way of God, he paid for it with his life. Be wise in fulfilling your calling, for it is God who determines the time and duration.

May the grace and peace of God be with you all.
