The Lord says, “Now I will show them My power; now I will show them My might.
At last they will know and understand that I am the Lord."
Jeremiah 16:21 (NLT)
This passage recounts the idolatry of Judas and God's judgment against them. They abandoned God's ways and turned to other gods for refuge. For this reason, God delivered them into Babylonian captivity with the intention of leading them to repent of their sin and return to Him. The severity of the punishment of His people was also a way for God to cause other nations, called the Gentiles, to turn from idols to Him.
The thing to understand about God's way of doing things is that He does not act randomly, He always achieves His goal even if someone in the process has to suffer. Ultimately, His goal is always to make everything work out for the good of those He loves and who seek Him. If in the Old Testament God used the voice of Jeremiah and other prophets to speak to His people, today we have pastors, teachers who have His word to teach us His will.
A day will come when the people of Israel will see and understand the power of God and His love for them. In the meantime, God calls us to turn to Him. We have no excuse before Him, for He gave His Son on the cross to forgive us and save us from all sin; He gave us the Holy Spirit as the seal that guarantees our salvation. If God's people still do not see His power, you and I have the opportunity to experience it. In Jesus we have seen and understood that He is Lord. Let us live this grace with gratitude.
May the grace and peace of God be with you all.
