God Knows You Better Than You Know Yourself

Even before there is a word on my tongue, Behold, Lord, You know it all.

Psalm 139:4 (NASB)

For her birthday, a little girl went to her father to ask for a special gift. Seeing his daughter arrive at his office all smiles, the father, who was reading a book, placed it on his desk and asked her before she could even open her mouth, "What gift do you want me to give you this year?" Embarrassed that her father had understood, the little girl changed the reason for her presence with her father. Knowing his daughter well, the father understood why she had come to see him all smiles.

Like this father and his little girl, God, omniscient, knows our thoughts even before we have time to express them. This is what David expressed in his praise to God. He understood that God was aware of his every action. He knew the reason for his thoughts and their intentions. God's knowledge of us is limited neither by time nor space. The actions we will take in a year, or even ten years, are already known to God. That's why He always has a plan of action to protect us and keep us from falling.

You're probably wondering if God knows in advance the thoughts of your heart and the words not yet on your lips, why pray without ceasing? If God acted on our thoughts without giving us time to express them, or systematically prevented us from acting, He would not need to maintain an intimate relationship with us, and we would never be aware of our condition. What God desires is to develop a personal relationship with you by knowing what is in your heart before you even know it yourself. Talk to God, explain everything to Him; this is what pleases Him in His relationship with you.

May God's grace and peace be with you all.
