God’s Timing of Response

But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.

2 Peter 3:8 (ESV)

Twelve-year-old Patrice asked his mother for his Christmas present before going to bed. He woke up an hour later and went to the Christmas tree to see if his mother had left him his present yet. Disappointed when he couldn’t find it, he began to cry, concluding that his mother didn’t love him or think about him. Frustrated, he went back to bed. The next morning, still in despair, he found his gift waiting for him wrapped at the foot of his bed.

For little Patrice, the time to receive his gift was now, when he wanted it most. However, his mother had another plan in mind. Her intention was for Patrice to find his gift when he woke up in the morning. We all have this same problem when we wait for God to answer our prayers. We want Him to answer us the second we end our prayer with a powerful “Amen.” God doesn’t work like we do. He understands time very differently than we do.

Your situation may last for months or even years, leading you to become discouraged and believe that God does not care about you as Patrice did with his mother. However, you must remember that the Bible tells us that one day is like a thousand years to God, just as a thousand years are a day. It is not the time of the answer that should interest you the most but God’s time. Everything He does, He does it in His time, according to His plan. Your years of pain will mean one day to you when you understand that God used them to transform you and mature you in faith and patience.

May the grace and peace of God be with you all.
