Holding on to the Word

Teach me, O Lord, the way of thy statutes; and I will keep it to the end.

Psalm 119:33 (RSV)

When we consider the different aspects of Psalm 119, we can understand that David was thirsting for the presence of God, he had at heart the desires of God's heart. He wanted to do everything to obey Him and please Him. In this Psalm, he asks the Lord to do many things for him and he tells what the word of God has accomplished in his life. Here, he says something striking, not only that he wants to hold on to the word, but that he holds on to it until the end.

If in verse 11 he says that he holds the word in his heart so as not to sin against God, here, he asks God to teach him the way of his statutes so that he holds on to it until the end of his days. In fact, by teach me, we can say that David is asking God to reveal to him the foundation of his precepts, to help him understand what He means through His laws so that he can better obey them. By retaining, David means that he wants to know them completely in order to obey them as God desires.

Are you like David who seeks to understand everything that God wants to express through His word in order to apply them to your life? As a Christian, this is what God asks us to do, to study His word and keep it in our hearts, to teach it to others and to proclaim it to those who do not know Christ. But how can you teach something that you do not know and do not practice? Ask God to reveal to you the hidden truths through the lines of His word so that you will retain it until Christ returns.

May the grace and peace of God be with you all.
