Obey Without Imitating

Therefore, whatever they tell you, do and comply with it all, but do not do as they do; for they say things and do not do them.

Matthew 23:3 (NASB)

As Christians, we always need a role model, a religious leader to imitate, just as Paul recommended the Corinthians do with him. However, it is not always advisable to choose just any leader, whether because they preach well or because they have a deep knowledge of the Bible. Good speech and good theological knowledge do not make a Christian leader a true spiritual role model to imitate.

In his speech to his audience, this is exactly what Jesus warned them about the Pharisees. Although they are teachers of the law, they are content to judge and condemn those who do not obey their teachings. However, they do not live by their own teachings. They encourage people to make considerable efforts to please God while remaining inactive. This is a situation we still encounter today. Many who preach do so for others, not for themselves.

As much as their teachings can help you draw closer to God and serve Him as He desires, it is your duty to apply their teachings to your life. However, it is not always good to follow their examples and do as they do, for they will lead you astray, and you could commit many sins without even realizing it, because you are imitating the wrong people. Do not let your spiritual emotions push you to follow a Christian leader. If you need a mentor to guide you, ask God to provide one. He will gladly do so.

May God's grace and peace be with you all.
