Our Savior’s Prayer

I am not asking on behalf of these alone, but also for those who believe in Me through their word.

John 17:20 (NASB)

Most Christians desire their pastor to intercede with God on their behalf, especially when facing trials or feeling their faith waver. They are convinced that God will hear the prayers of these men of faith who have fully dedicated themselves to His service. If we so earnestly desire our pastor's prayers, imagine the joy and peace that fill us knowing that our Savior Himself is always interceding for us before the Father. This is proof that He keeps us close to His heart and places immense value on our salvation and our faith in Him.

One might think that this prayer of Jesus was addressed solely to the disciples who accompanied Him in His ministry. Yet, this verse proves He had much more in mind; He was thinking of all those who, throughout the centuries, would hear their message (the epistles) and come to repentance. This means Jesus was thinking of us—you and me. As He so clearly stated in this verse, He was not praying only for them (the disciples), but also for all those (you, me, and all other believers across the world) who would come to repentance. It is worth noting, however, that His prayer is specifically offered on behalf of those who will believe in Him.

Earlier, in verse 9, Jesus says that He is not praying for those who belong to the world, but for those whom the Father has given Him. In other words, we can say that Jesus was praying for the unity of the Church—that is, for believers of every race, nation, and ethnicity. If Jesus, our High Priest, interceded with God for our salvation centuries ago, how much more surely will He do so today to come to our aid in this crumbling world. Jesus sees you and pays attention to every stage of your life, from the day of your repentance to this very moment. So, do not worry; God already knows your situation.
