The father of a righteous child has great joy; a man who fathers a wise son rejoices in him.

What makes a father and mother happy after their children leave home? If we were to ask this question to different elderly couples, they would certainly not all have the same answer. Some would focus on the financial success of their children; others on their profession, such as doctor, engineer, accountant, etc.; and still others because their children have established a home and given them grandchildren. Whatever the reason, the important thing for them is that they are happy and proud of their children.
God has given the basic principle for educating one's child. The Bible teaches us that parents should train their children in the way they should go and when they grow up, they will not depart from it. This is the principle that makes a father and mother happy when they see their children leave home. The son who brings joy to his father by becoming righteous and wise in adulthood has certainly received the necessary training and discipline to become so. This education also involves the use of the whip when necessary.
The parent who wants to rejoice in his son must also be an example for him. He must be by his lifestyle and the daily expression of his love for God and his word. Deuteronomy 6 verse 7 commands us to teach the word of God to our children when we are at home, when we go on a journey with them, when we lie down and when we rise up. By obeying this command, it is guaranteed that when they are grown and leave home, they will be our joy and our pride. We will rejoice in their wisdom coming from the teaching of the word of God.
