He humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross.
Philippians 2:8 (NLT)
Humility, although a virtue approved by God, is a quality or attitude that we all struggle to adopt, not because we are incapable of it, but rather because we don't want to be despised or feel inferior to others. We are too proud of ourselves and our worth to humble ourselves before others, even if it is for their good or to avoid a worse situation. It is this refusal to humble ourselves that most often prevents us from helping one another and appreciating the efforts of others.
If Jesus had not humbled Himself to carry the cross to Calvary and be crucified like a common criminal of His time, you and I would not be here today, rejoicing in God's grace toward us. Imagine a president who voluntarily accepts not only to be treated as an ordinary person, but also to suffer the punishment that a thief, a criminal, or even an outcast of society would endure. From his presidential position, he finds himself among the most despised. This is exactly what Jesus did for you and me, and much more. He left His divine state to live in a mortal body and be mistreated by those for whom He gave Himself.
Humbling oneself may seem too humiliating, especially in today's world where everyone seeks to make a name for themselves and be honored and respected by all. But remember that most often, the one who voluntarily accepts to humble themselves is ultimately valued for their courage and true sense of worth. God Himself tells us that He rejects the proud and grants His grace to the humble. If Jesus, in His obedience to the Father, voluntarily humbled Himself to save you, then you too must set an example for others by showing that you are His disciple when you humble yourself. Even if some take advantage of you, God will notice you and exalt you.
May God's grace and peace be with you all.
