But Jehoshaphat asked, “Is there no longer a prophet of the Lord here whom we can inquire of?”
1 Kings 22:7 (NIV)
The difference between a spiritual Christian and an immature one lies in the fact that the mature believer prays before making a decision and seeks counsel from someone more mature, whereas the immature Christian—even if they do pray—might simply take a chance, reasoning that as long as they harbor no ill will toward others, God will protect them if problems arise. Their decisions are most often based on emotions and the desire to achieve a goal or realize a project that appeals to them. This is how many make the mistake of drifting away from God, often without even realizing it.
The story of Ahab, King of Israel, and Jehoshaphat, King of Judah, perfectly illustrates this trait. Ahab—described as a king who no longer feared God—decided to conquer a territory simply because he wanted to possess it. To this end, he asked Jehoshaphat to join him. Eager to prove his capability and ensure success, he took four hundred prophets along to validate his plan. Despite their unanimous approval, Jehoshaphat—who feared God—asked to consult a prophet of the Lord. This request displeased Ahab, as he was determined to satisfy his own desires. You have likely made a decision contrary to God's will at some point without consulting someone more mature than yourself.
This is a common tendency when we become overly focused on something. We want to move forward without considering what God might say or do. If you want your endeavors to succeed, make sure to turn to God before acting, for He declares: "Your plans are not Mine." It may be the dream of your life, but what about the dream God has for you? If you pray without receiving an answer, do not think that God has not heard you; do not hesitate to speak to a more mature Christian or to your leader. They will be able to guide you and intercede with God on your behalf, so that your decision aligns with God's heart.
May the grace and peace of God be with you.
