I assure you: The one who believes in Me will also do the works that I do. And he will do even greater works than these, because I am going to the Father.
John 14:12 (HCSB)
A young man, a member of the Discipleship Ministry, once asked during a meeting, "Why can't I do the same works as Jesus?" Then he added, "I believe He is the Son of God, I believe in His sacrifice, and I pray continually." According to this young man, he had accomplished everything the verse prescribed and more; he should have at least been able to do what Jesus did. Yet, he couldn't. Seeing his frustration, the pastor asked him, "What are these works you want to do?"
Sometimes we have great aspirations, but we fail to clearly define our goals or true desires. In response to this question, the young man began to mumble, trying to explain what he had in mind. In fact, he was talking about casting out demons, healing diseases, and performing miracles. When the pastor finally understood his problem, he clarified the true meaning of the verse. He explained that the works Jesus speaks of are proclaiming the gospel of salvation, teaching the Word, helping the poor, and supporting widows and orphans.
This young man is not alone in considering these works as miracles. But Jesus goes beyond physical works; rather, He aims at the salvation of lost souls and the repentance of those who have strayed from God. It is through the preaching of the Word that miracles will occur, demons will be cast out, for the Holy Spirit will accomplish God's will among His people. The work you must do for God is to share the gospel of Jesus Christ with those around you. Miracles and wonders will happen on their own when God deems it necessary. Focus on the lost souls.
May God's grace and peace be with you all.
