Their only suggestion was that we keep on helping the poor, which I have always been eager to do.
Galatians 2:10 (NTL)
When we accept Christ, we all think of our eternal salvation and what God calls us to do in His name. This thought motivates us so much that we often forget one of the most important aspects of the Christian life: Caring for the poor. It is not that we do not think of them, but for many of us, the Christian life is summed up in our personal relationship with God, His forgiveness, His grace and His blessings towards us.
Jesus teaches much more than that. He even tells us that every time we feed or clothe a poor person, we are doing it to Him. We must not ignore that the poor need us as Christians to represent Christ to them by helping them in their situation. Paul explains to us how Peter and the other apostles welcomed him and Barnabas and gave them the hand of fellowship so that their ministry would be recognized by all. But above all, the first thing Peter recommended to them was to remember the poor.
Paul confirmed that he cared for the poor. As a Christian, you must not only focus on the assurance of your salvation, what awaits you in heaven, and all the blessings that God has in store for you. You must also think of those who are suffering and to whom life is not charitable. This is the work of your faith. He who loves God, also loves others and thinks of them. When you pray for your family, pray also for the poor because God can hear your prayer and can use you to bless them as well.
May the grace and peace of God be with you all.
