Transfiguration or Transference

While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them; and suddenly a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear Him!”

Matthew 17:5 (NKJV)

Most often, when we read this passage, we focus so intensely on the revealed divinity of Jesus that we concentrate our attention far more on the Transfiguration itself. Consequently, many miss the true message this passage conveys. It is true that the Transfiguration is of great importance, but the real focal point of our attention should be the presence of Moses and Elijah, standing beside Jesus. Even the disciples failed to grasp the significance of this pivotal moment in human history. It was this lack of understanding, driven by emotion, that led Peter to suggest to Jesus that he erect three tents: two for the guests and one for himself.

What was unfolding that day was far more important than the Transfiguration itself; God was opening the door to grace, a grace that would free humanity from the punishment of divine wrath. Moses represented the Law, which humanity was unable to observe in a way that pleased God, while Elijah represented the Prophets who had announced the coming of the Messiah who would save us. All were so preoccupied with the Law and the Prophets that they struggled to grasp that Grace was right there before their eyes. God openly declared it to them so that they could pass from death to life. For while the Law exposed humanity's sins, Grace, embodied in Jesus Christ, forgave their sin and freed them from impending condemnation.

To this day, we continue to make the same mistake Peter did. We focus on the religious aspects of God's commandments and on everything that catches our eye and amazes us, rather than heeding His call and submitting to His will. Do not dwell on what merely satisfies your desires, for God has something far greater in store for you than the mere fulfillment of your wishes. A place awaits you in heaven; He has established a precise plan to draw you to Him. Therefore, do not be like those who applaud the Transfiguration instead of rejoicing in the Transference that assures the forgiveness of your sins and eternal salvation in Jesus Christ.

May the grace and peace of God be with you.
