Mais ce que J'ai contre toi, c'est que tu as abandonné ton premier amour.
Apocalypse 2:4 (LSG)
I would like to point out to you in this passage that Christ is addressing the church of Ephesus (verse 1), the first of the seven churches to which He sent letters of praise and reproach. When the verses in this passage speak of churches, they are referring both to the assembly in general and to each individual Christian, regardless of his or her position in the church.
When we read from verse 1 to 5, we see that before mentioning their weakness or where they all fall, Christ praised their work, their perseverance, their suffering and their attachment to the word of God. This means that this church was much more devoted to material things and their moral value than to their personal relationship with God. Yet, according to verse 2, they knew the word and could test the false prophets.
The praise of this Church did not prevent Christ from pointing out her error, she had abandoned her first love. Christ could judge her, but instead He offered her a safe alternative: remember what led her to lose that love and repent. This verse also applies to you today. Do you remember where you fell, what took you away from God? Then it is time to repent and take your place with Christ, because otherwise Jesus will always have this complaint against you.
May the grace and peace of God be with you all.
