Your Descendants Will Benefit

Teach a youth about the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.

During a family counseling session, a mother once confided in me that a mother gives birth to a child, but the feelings and attitudes the child will develop later are not up to her. I partially agreed with her, as each of us must decide what we want to become based on our chosen lifestyle, our upbringing, and the people around us.

However, I didn't support her by sharing her opinion. I replied, "What if I told you that a large part of what they will become and their life choices depends entirely on what you gave them during their childhood?" Taken by surprise, the mother got the shock of her life; she hadn't expected such a response from me. But that's exactly what this verse tells us: the upbringing you give your children will determine their decisions as adults.

What you tell your children will stay with them throughout their lives. Even if they forget it for a moment, when they have to make an important choice, they will remember your instructions. That's when they will make a wise decision. If you teach your children the Word of God, you show them the way to follow in Jesus Christ. As they grow up, they will not regret the teaching you gave them. Moreover, they will do the same for their children. Your descendants will benefit from it.
