And Eli′jah came near to all the people, and said, “How long will you go limping with two different opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him; but if Ba′al, then follow him.” And the people did not answer him a word.

1 Kings 18:21 (RSV)

Although God created us for His glory and desires us to serve and worship Him, He gives us the power of our choices. We can choose to submit to Him or to disinterest ourselves in Him. This is one of the greatest proofs of God’s love for us. He loves us so much that He allows us to make life choices as we wish. However, He may decide to influence our choices based on whether they may cause long-term harm or threaten the lives of others.

You may be familiar with the story of Elijah versus the 850 false prophets of Baal. Ahab was the king who angered God more than any other king of Israel. By allowing himself to be led by his wicked wife Jezebel to turn his back on God. He made the choice to abandon the way of God to worship the false god Baal. His attitude reveals that God did not influence his choices and decisions, he acted according to the desires of his heart without taking into account his worship for the one true God. In his confrontation with the 850 false prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel, Elijah called on God to support him.

This confrontation between the true God of Israel and the false god Baal can be seen as a football match. On one side, the prophets of Ahab and on the other, Elijah and the people of Israel. Elijah did not flinch because he was confident that his faith plus God would win the battle. For him, it was a multitude against a small group. Both sides built their altar to offer sacrifices. You probably know the rest of the story. No matter what situation presents itself to you, you can be assured that your faith plus God will win the victory without you having to make the slightest effort. Your faith plus God will always represent a multitude.

May the grace and peace of God be with you all.
