But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life.
Romans 6:22 (NIV)
In Jesus Christ, God has not only saved us from the condemnation of sin, He has also opened the way for us to be at peace with Him and to serve Him. When Paul says that we are free from sin, he means that sin no longer has power over us to make us guilty before God. Sinning no more is something we must work on every day, but if we do sin, in Jesus Christ, we are all forgiven.
If Hebrews 12:14 tells us to pursue holiness, Paul shows us in this verse that holiness is the fruit of our consecration to God. To become a slave to God is to dedicate yourself to Him entirely. This means living according to His will, obeying His precepts and serving Him faithfully. God has already declared you holy and cleansed you from your sins, now you must walk in His holiness by obeying and applying His word to your life.
The grace that God gives you has nothing to do with your good deeds or your burning desire to help others. Our sins have condemned us before God, no matter how much good we have done. Therefore, in this incorruptible body, you must live by the Spirit and do the works of the Spirit, for the purpose of your journey on this earth is eternal life with God.
May the grace and peace of God be with you all.
